Folic acid can mask a Vitamin B12 deficiency

I remember studying this at University. When food is fortified with folic acid, it could mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. This was the main reason why bread wasn't fortified with folic acid in the UK for such a long time (it is now from last year). Fortification would help pregnant women needing folic acid for their growing baby but it could mask a deficiency in certain groups of people, like the elderly.
